About Opoku Ware Senior High

Opoku Ware School, often referred to as OWASS, is a public Catholic senior high school for boys, located in Santasi, a suburb of Kumasi, which is the capital of the Ashanti region of Ghana. The school code is 0050110. The school's denomination is Catholic. The school is Category A. Opoku Ware School, originally called the Yaa Asantewaa College, was established by the Gold Coast Government at the request of the Catholic Church in Ashanti Region to cater for boys’ education, as an alternative to traveling to St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast. In February 1952, Rev. Fr. Peter Burgess, conducted interviews and admitted 60 boys into the school at Santas. He devised a system of identification in numbers that is still in use, with the first batch being numbered K1 to K60. Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II changed the name to Opoku Ware, believing it is an anomaly for a boys’ school to bear a female name.
