About - Kumasi Wesley Girls High School history

The genesis of Kumasi Wesley Girls High School dates to the 1960’s when some concerned Old Methodist School Boys and Girls at Wesley Methodist Church, now the Wesley Cathedral at Adum, felt the need to establish Secondary School to help parents who could not afford the cost of Boarding Secondary Education for their children. The idea did not receive much support those days, but it did not die entirely. As it was, in 1979, Rev. De Graft Johnson, who was the then Superintendent Minister in charge of the Wesley Methodist Church, had the vision and he took a bold decision to set up the school with eleven students. THE SCHOOL CAMPUS The school opened officially on November 11, 1979 at Freeman Methodist Church at Mbrom with eleven students. The school was moved to the Mmofraturo Girls’ Boarding School where it was accommodated in two classrooms and an office. The enrolment increased to 32 students. In1985, it was moved to its present site, opposite the Goil Filling Station and the Tafo Cemetery off the Mampong road. It is less than five (5) drive from Kejetia. THE NAMES OF THE SCHOOL. The school was first named Methodist day Secondary School because it was to be owned and supported by All the Methodist Churches in Ashanti Region in the name of the entire Methodist Church Ghana. At the Effiduasi Synod of the church in 1985, it was found out that the Methodist churches outside Kumasi were not much interested in the school because it was a Day School which could not admit their wards who wanted to be in the boarding school. The ownership of the school was therefore given to the Wesley church at Adum. Thus, it became Wesley Day Secondary School with an increase in students’ enrolment to thirty-two. (32) The Kumasi Diocesan Synod of 1999 decided to annex Wesley Day into Mmofraturo School, with the view to developing it into a composite whole offering first class education akin to that of Wesley Girls’ at Cape Coast. In 2001, in furthermore of the church’s objective, the school became known and called Mmofraturo Girls’ Secondary School. The school finally in 2004 became Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Secondary School upon the then Director General of Education’s approval for the change. STATUS OF THE SCHOOL Between 1979 when the school was established and 1992, it was a private Day School. In 1993, the church applied to the Ministry of Education for absorption into the public system and it became a public unit school administered by government but manage by the church. Kumasi Wesley Girls’ High School was granted the boarding status with effect from the 2006/2007 academic year. Though it was started as a mixed school, the boys were finally phased out in 2004. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND/IMPORTANT LANDMARKS The first batch of students numbering 11 was admitted into the school which was located at the Freeman Methodist Chapel at Mbrom- on November 11, 1979. The school was later located at the premises of Mmofraturo Girls’ Boarding School with two classrooms and an administrative office. By this time the enrolment of students had increased to thirty-two (32). It was in 1984 that the school finally moved to its present site. It is not worthy that the school, right from its inception has operated under four different names and interestingly each of the names and the time it was given tells a full story, reflective of the dynamic and exigencies of the period. The first name given in 1979 was “Methodist Day Secondary School”. In 1985, the name was changed to Wesley Day Secondary School following a decision taken by members of Synod at Effiduasi-Ashanti in the same year. Later a decision was taken to hand over the ownership and management of the school to the Wesley Cathedra Methodist Church, Adum and the adoption of the name Wesley Day Secondary School took place. Enrolment at this time stood at one hundred and thirty-two (32) students. The year 1990 is considered as very important in the annals of the school. It was in this year that the school became government assisted and was thus absorbed into the public school system. Given the steady progress of the school and its strategic location, the leadership of the Methodist Church quickly saw that annexing it to Mmofraturo Girls’ Boarding Basic School would make it a Methodist Educational complex where a child could start Kindergarten (K.G) on the same compound and complete her tertiary education there. With the above lofty objective, the name of the school was changed again in 2001 to Mmofraturo Girls’ Secondary School. Expansion of facilities in the school therefore became the priority of the church and with the support of the PTA and government, steady progress was made in that direction. Five years later, that is, in 2006 a very important and strategic decision was taken by the church. This was bound to change the fortunes and the future direction of the school. The school which until 2006 was co-educational was changed into the purely female educational institution. This decision, from all indications, was occasioned by the inspiration taken from the outstanding academic performance and maintenance of strict moral uprightness, particularly among students at Wesley Girls’ High School, Cape Coast. The name of the school was thus changed from Mmofraturo Girls’ Secondary School to Kumasi Wesley Girls’ High School in 2006, with approval from the Ghana Educational Service (GES) PROGRAMMES OFFERED AT THE SCHOOL. At the time of its establishment the school offered General Arts Program but with the passage of time the academic curricula were expanded to include; General Science, Business, Visual Arts and Home Economics. SCHOOL POPULATION As at March 2013, the total number of Students stood at 2625. Of this number, 502 offer Science, 1,176 offer General Arts, 367 offers Business, 442 offer Home Economics and 129 offer Visual Arts. The number of teaching staff and at 116 and non-teaching staff also stands at 79.
